A GPS in Your Car

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Car traveling has been a lot simpler since the invention of the Global Positioning System. Designed to help with navigation of more complex systems such as aircrafts, GPS devices match all the needs of a traveler. GPS for cars are products that receive and decode signals from a complex network of satellites that enable you to determine the current car location and help you set the route for a destination. There is a great diversity in terms of GPS design, features and formats, so that you may be as keen on details as you like. You save money with some cheap GPS units, they are easy to plug in and store, but the operation may be faulty or inconsistent. More quality comes with more money.

The car layout is incredibly important when trying to decide on a certain model. For instance, the presence of a monitor for map display on the car dashboard may be very inconvenient or uncomfortable with some GPS for cars because of the vehicle design. You have to make sure that the device does not block the air vents and that it does not ruin the view from the passenger’s seat. GPS for cars therefore have to be chosen so as to match the dashboard features and the entire interior car design for maximum of efficiency and convenience.

Multiple features! Consider this criterion when shopping for GPS for cars. Navigation info can be provided in multiple ways, therefore it is very convenient for the user to select a variant that suits his/her needs. Some GPS receivers can help you navigate by using the data from a personal address book, others take the location directly from the map, while others can operate by intersection or directly by address. Moreover, following the same line of thought, you should buy a GPS for cars with features for both graphical and vocal directions. Besides verbal directions, the GPS monitor displays arrows to indicate the direction, determines the position of the car as related to the destination and shows the name of the street.

There are GPS for cars that provide information on points of interest, airports, ATMs, hotels, restaurants and many other sites. Such a complex device may seem a bit more expensive, but when you travel a lot and need to go from place to place, information is crucial. Moreover, very advanced GPS systems can make updates about the points-of-interest from a certain region. Given the multitude of features, it may seem hard to find the right GPS for cars. The best way to sort things out is by going to a retailer that has demo units in-store so that you can check how the system works for yourself. Then, the features of a GPS unit will be a lot easier to appreciate!

RV Parking

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

When it comes time to locating a parking spot for your RV, you have many options depending upon your location and needs. Many areas, especially ones that cater to tourism, will have places that specialize in overnight parking for your vehicle. RV campgrounds are the most obvious solution, but not the only possibility.

Campgrounds are generally great parking locations because they offer a lot of utilities that an RV owner can use, such as electrical and water hookups and dumping areas for waste. The cost to stay at these locations is often minimal, saving you money. Finding locations with a store on the site is beneficial for finding specialty supplies that are not found many other places. RV’s will often require specific kinds of toilet paper that easily breaks down in the tank which are normally carried at these sites.

Rest areas often provide adequate parking spots for RVs in more remote areas that lack appropriate camping facilities. Keep a careful eye on your generator’s consumption if you do end up parking at a rest stop for any serious length of time. A good rule of thumb to remember is generally a gallon of fuel per hour of running it, so keep the time minimal.

Before you go on a vacation or other excursion, sit down and plan out areas that are friendly to RV parking and mark your route that way. Many of the better sites such as state and national parks are cheap alternatives, and you can often reserve a spot in advance to make sure it’s available when you need it.

To help in planning, it might be worth locating a book on RV friendly sites at a local bookstore – it’s a cheap alternative to searching for hours for an appropriate site. Just the knowledge that you’ve got a site picked out ahead of time can make the entire trip more enjoyable, with your mind a bit easier without one more thing to worry about.

Taylor Martinerin writes on a variety of RV related subjects, offering many additional rv camping tips, and additonal suggestions on rv campsites.

Non Detergent Engine Oil

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

Engine owners eventually need to make an important decision about how to best care for their engines, with detergent oil or non detergent engine oil .  Even though detergent oil has not been widely used for many decades, it is the predominant type of oil used today.  Non detergent oil is not best suited for all applications, oil distributors normally recommend engine types for specific oils.

There are many people that speculate about the detergent content inside regular detergent oil.  Some people agree that the use of the word detergent, in the traditional sense of the word, is not present, but an ingredient is present that prevents carbon deposits from joining together to make larger sludge deposits.  In this theory, smaller carbon deposits suspended in detergent oil would then, theoretically, be filtered out by the oil filter.

Non detergent motor oil is also used in other applications such as inside transmissions or used as gear oil, depending on manufacturers’ guidelines.  Each engine or gear box should come with recommendations from the company on the best lubricant to use for optimal performance and maintenance.  Engine owners can usually access information about their motors or gear boxes from online sources such as downloadable PDF files or owners manual documents.

In addition to ND oil or non detergent motor oil, there is also HD oil, which is high detergent oil.  For engines that require it, engines may be lubricated with high detergent oil instead of the traditional types of oil.  One way for people to clean the inside of engines is to engage the use of a high detergent oil.  It varies by auto tech, but high detergent oil can be used as a viable solution for some engines.  HD oil is considered to be more gentile on breaking up sludge and less likely to break off sludge in large pieces that would clog oil passages.  Other options to using a higher detergent motor oil is to simply change engine oil more frequently to drain out the bits of carbon more often.

Ipod Adapter For Your Car

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

There is no question that the most well liked cartable music player on the market is the iPod.  With its tiny size, large memory, and digital sound, iPods allow you to bring a massive music library with you wherever you go, and it all fits in the center of your hand.  IPods are becoming increasingly ever present as more and more consumers eschew compact disks in favour of the convenience, portability, and performance of these small wonders.  However, iPods are not perfect and if they have a lack it is most blatant when you want to use your iPod in the car, unless, naturally, you have purchased an iPod car adapter.

While some new cars are supplied with iPod docking stations, it is a rare feature that was not available till very recently.  For the overwhelming majority of drivers their car stereo is still designed to accommodate compact disks, which up until recently were the music medium of preference.  Because an iPod can store loads of music titles its advantages over compact disks are clear, and iPod owners naturally need to utilize this while driving in their vehicles, and they need an iPod car adapter to do that.

There are a few types of iPod car adapters on the market.  The most elementary model would be for use in cars that still have an analog cassette player.  For those cars, a cassette adapter can be wired into the headphone jack of the iPod, and the cassette can be inserted into the car stereo.  the sound quality of this option is not ideal, and most late model cars have CD players instead of cassette players.

If your car has a compact disc player, then a cassette iPod car adapter is not a choice.  The Neo iON is the most recent and best iPod car adapter on the market.  The iON plugs right into your iPod and is connected through a wire that plugs straight into the CD changer port that is found on the back of your car CD player.  Installing the iON needs some amount of talent and time and those who are less mechanically inclined may decide to have it professionally installed.

The iON offers a direct connection that delivers the best quality digital sound, but perhaps the most alluring feature is the way your iON and iPod accessories interface with your car stereo system.  Once attached to the iON, you now don’t have to fumble with the buttons on your iPod while driving.  Instead you can change musical tracks by employing the present buttons on your car stereo.

Installing an iON in your car has obvious advantages, but those advantages come at a cost.  The iON isn’t transportable, it becomes part of your car, so if you have got many cars you would need to install an iON in each if you need to bring your iPod with you wherever you go.  Further, if your car stereo doesn’t have a CD changer port then an iON would not be compatible with your car.  If those scenarios describe you, then an iPod car adapter with a universal FM modulator is what you want.  A FM modulator will let you broadcast your iPod thru one of several FM frequencies, and you can tune in your iPod on your car radio.

Another fascinating feature of an iPod car adapter, such as the iON and the FM modulator, is they offer a power source for your iPod so you don’t have to fret about charging your iPod?s battery ; it occurs instantly.  An iPod car adapter gives you the power to hear your whole music library for as long as you would like, and as far as you drive.
